Lance to be Iditarod Honorary Musher

Jason’s brother, the late, great Lance Mackey is to be made the Honorary Musher for the 2023 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome.

Lance competed in the Iditarod 16 times, had 6 Top 10 finishes and finished in 1st place in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010

Jason will also compete in the 2023 race, where he will honour his brothers memory and scatter his ashes along the 1049 mile route.

Iditarod Board President, Mike Mills, contacted Lance’s wife, Seane, to notify her of the award and ask their family to be a part of the celebration.

During the Ceremonial Start on Saturday, March 4, 2023, Lance’s children, Atigun and Lozen, will ride in the first sled to leave the chute driven by the 2023 Iditarod Jr. Champion.

  1. Good luck Jason. Your brother was a friend of my wife and I he called us his fisherman/farmer friends. I hope Atigun and Lozen ok as we were concerned with the loss of both parents. My wife made Atigun a baby quilt and we supported Lance many times in his fundraiser events. Been to his house and kennels to visit. We will be rooting for you. Sincerely Jim and Gayle Eastwood
